Mount Etna

Mount Etna is the highest volcano in Europe and one of the most active in the world. Its eruptions, on the summit and on the slopes, can endure for long time. Because of its constant activity, Etna is one of the most suggestive and charming places in the world, the ideal set for several myths and legends. The Greeks believed that it was the house of Cyclops and Volcano, god of fire. Ancient mariners knew it well because it was as a lighthouse for them. Arabs were so stricken by its greatness to consider it “mount of mounts”, the mountain for antonomasia.

I four summit craters are: Voragine and Bocca Nuova, created inside the Central Crater in 1945 and 1968, the North-east crater, born in 1911, the highest point of Etna (3330 mt) at the moment and the South-east crater, born in 1971, now the most active among the four. This configuration is different from the one of around one century ago, when on the top there was only the Central Crater.

Etna Park is rich of typical vegetation and fauna and it’s the perfect destination for trekking and nature lovers. Organized excursions are available during all the year.
